As a tech journalist, I get access to technology before the world gets to see it, and I can tell you that AI is changing the tech landscape every second. We don’t have to wait for years, months or even days. It is happening right now, right here on your smartphone and your wearable devices through Spatial Computing.
Google Pixel 9 Series and Gemini Live
A few months ago, I was at Googleplex (Google’s HQ) in Mountainview, California, for the launch of the Google Pixel 9 series. In the heart of Silicon Valley, I got a chance to experience future technologies and devices Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, is working on.
One of them is a Secret Project called Google Project Starline – it’s the future of teleconferencing, a real-time bi-directional communication system that lets two people, separated by distance, experience a face-to-face conversation as if they were present in the same room. The platform uses 3D imaging, cameras and a custom-designed screen to let people converse with someone as if they are there. It is also referred to as the ‘Magical Window’ to communicate with others in a three-dimensional space.
While Project Starline is not available to the masses, Google’s Gemini Live AI assistant is available to all – even iPhone users as an app.
Gemini Live allows users to engage in real-time conversations with the AI, enabling tasks like brainstorming, practising presentations, or exploring ideas.
Key features of Gemini Live include natural, back-and-forth conversations where users can interrupt or redirect queries, and the ability to run hands-free while multitasking or even when the device is locked.
Additionally, Gemini Live integrates with other Google services like Gmail and Maps, enhancing productivity and offering AI-driven assistance for a broader range of tasks.
Apple Intelligence – The world is eagerly awaiting the official rollout of Apple’s AI-led software experiences for Apple Devices. But I have been using it for the last few months as a Beta tester. It’s designed to enhance user experience by combining advanced generative AI models with personal context to deliver smarter, more intuitive features while protecting user privacy.
The standout features include:
- New Writing Tools: These tools help users write, proofread, and summarize text in apps like Mail and Notes. For instance, you can get quick email responses or summaries key points in messages.
- Siri: Siri gets smarter with deeper language understanding, maintaining context across multiple queries and integrating with third-party apps to help with tasks like finding photos or scheduling messages. ChatGPT integration is also coming, allowing for more complex interactions.
- Image Playground and more.
Apple’s devices, like iPhones, iPads, and Macs, starting with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

ChatGPT
OpenAI’s ChatGPT started the Generative AI revolution and democratised the use of LLMs that we use today to experience smart generative AI tools and assistants. While ChatGPT remains platform agnostic and universally available, the rise of on-devices by Apple and Google has limited the use of ChatGPT on smartphones.
In a nutshell, these Generative AI tools are way different from the smart assistants we have been using for a decade now. These LLMs can do the following:
Conversational – they can engage in back-and-forth conversations with users, providing detailed and context-aware responses. It can remember previous interactions within a single conversation, allowing for dynamic, multi-turn dialogues.
Generative Abilities – It can generate human-like text based on prompts, making it useful for tasks like drafting content, brainstorming ideas, or even creating stories.
Multilingual – While primarily trained in English, ChatGPT can understand and generate text in several other languages.
Personalised – they learn from users’ habits and make suggestions.
So do let us know, which Generative AI assistant do you use and what do you use it for?
