Jacob collier a very nuanced musician is an artist famously known for his live shows. Why, you may ask and that’s where we are getting to. The seven-time grammy winner can only be called a post genre artist for you cannot confine his music to one specific genre ever. He creates music that feels very unconventional in contrast to contemporary music that we often listen to on mainstream.

With a niche fanbase, Jacob toured India solo in 2023 whilst completing his then unreleased album Djesse volume-4.  This year, returning in much more grandeur, Jacob came accompanied by his magnanimously talented band and put together a majestic show, including one of the finest singers we know, Varijashree Venugopal. Their back and forth in this intricate, delicate and better yet- astonishing performance was a treat to the ear. Varijashree’s presence added a very distinct dimension to the show. Her command over pitch, rhythm, and musical colour created this air of casual play in their exchange that felt conversational rather than performative.

The Bangalore show in October showed us how deeply immersive Jacob Collier’s concerts are, really. Unlike a regular performance where the audience remains a passive observer, the evening turned into a musical experience that an artist shared with his audience, where collective listening, responsiveness, and emotional presence were heavily relied on. What set this performance apart was the way structure and spontaneity coexisted. The ambiguity of the audience did not faze the artist and that simply shows the faith he has on his music. Jacob’s approach to live music often blurs the line between composer, performer, and conductor, and that’s why it’s such a delight.

It was also a night where you would witness an intelligent audience, not just an emotional one. The audience’s response throughout the night reflected an acute awareness of the rarity of such a concert. Silence when it was needed, enthusiasm when evoked, and an overall sense of shared understanding that something special was unfolding, was so deeply rooted in each person present there. Subtle harmonic turn taking, jolly modulations, and a resonance created through collective sound- that’s what the show largely encompassed.

Jacob stays rooted in connection. Between musicians, between genres, and between the stage and the audience. The performance thus stood as a reflection of how music, when approached with sincere passion and imagination, can transcend format and become an experience that lingers long after the final note.
