Bamboo Rafting in Wayanad
Experience the serenity of the Kabini River on a traditional bamboo raft. This one-hour journey takes you through a pristine section of the river, offering a glimpse into the tranquil beauty of nature. The adventure begins with a scenic drive followed by a short walk through a rubber plantation to reach the riverbank. Here, you can meet an experienced guide who will ensure your safety throughout the excursion.
As you embark on the raft, you will be provided with life jackets for your protection. The skilled guide will then navigate the raft downstream, allowing you to immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings. During the hour-long ride, you will have the opportunity to observe the daily life of the local villagers, spot a variety of bird species, and catch a glimpse of aquatic life below the water’s surface. Embrace this unique and primitive mode of water transport as you create lasting memories of your journey through the serene landscapes of the Kabini River.
The Man-animal Conflict
The walk will take you through the nearby jungle where your guide will be able to show you the wide variety of flora and fauna that abound here. You will also visit an ancient tribal temple hidden in a little clearing deep in the woods and other temples sacred to the Thirumugham, Elliampath, Cheriyamala, and Kandamala communities who maintain them. Wander down into the paddy fields that adjoin the Kuruva Islands, many tended to by local tribal communities, who cultivate a very rare, delicate strain of rice, called “Gandhakashala”. This endemic strain of rice famed for its fragrance is unfortunately becoming increasingly hard to find.
The walk ends at the Kabini river crossed on bamboo rafts. On the other side, a sumptuous ‘ela sadya’ awaits. Umesh and Lizzie, who run the Aswathy mess, have received rave reviews for their lunch.
Drive down to the Thirunelli temple, about 30 minutes away. Known as the “Kashi of the South,” this has been mentioned in texts dating back over a thousand years. The drive to the temple is an experience in itself, as it winds through the pretty Begur and Tholpetty wildlife sanctuaries – keep your eyes open for elephants are commonly spotted here, especially in the early mornings and evenings.”
Theyyam
Theyyam is a Hindu religious ritual practiced in northern Kerala and some parts of Karnataka. It consists of traditions, rituals and customs associated with temples and sacred groves of Malabar. The people of the region consider this a channel to a god and seek blessings from it.
Performed predominantly in the North Malabar region (consisting of present-day Kasargod, Kannur, Mahe Districts, Mananthavady Taluk of Wayanad and Vadakara and Koyilandy Taluks of Kozhikode). A similar custom known as Bhuta Kola is followed in the Tulunadu region of neighbouring Karnataka.
Theyyam season starts from the tenth day of the Malayalam month of Thulam (usually falls during October, and known as paththaam-udayam) and lasts up to seven months till the middle of Edavam month (typically late May and June). The last Kaliyaattam for the season is performed at Madayi Kavu and Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Temple, both of which are the family shrines of Kolathiri royal family.

Cycling through wildlife sanctuaries
This trail can be tailored to moderate difficulty depending on the start and end points. Drive over to North Wayanad to one of the little towns in the morning. Pedal down the smooth tarmac through dense forest lands. You will be crossing three different wildlife sanctuaries by the end of the ride. The undulating terrain poses an occasional challenge, but one cannot linger on the wayside, this area being one of the more frequented elephant corridors. The road trail ends and turns into a mud and gravel track that skirts ancient paddy fields to the broad river. Push the bikes onto a large bamboo raft or country boat based on the trail.
Once across the river, the hard-packed mud trail enters a patch of deciduous forests with a constant menace of elephant herds. Head onto the tarmac again. Ride the backcountry roads till you cross a twin bridge, and then turn into a sandy trail along the broken river bank. Enjoy this last but most enjoyable challenge of the day, for by the end of this stretch you will reach your vehicles. Ride over to a nearby local eatery that serves one of the best meals you will have in your life. Gorge yourself on a full-spread Kerala ela-sadya. And then roll into your vehicle to doze off during your drive back.
