One Wardrobe, Multiple Lives
The Rise of Versatile Dressing for the Modern Indian Woman
– By Anushka Gupta, Founder, 31 Labels

On any given day, the modern Indian woman lives several lives. A client presentation in the morning, a long lunch with friends, a family dinner she almost skipped. Each moment asks something different of her, yet she gets dressed only once. That, to me, is where versatile dressing begins. For a long time, our wardrobes were built in compartments: office clothes, party clothes, festive clothes and something comfortable for the weekend. That made sense when our lives moved in straight lines. Today they overlap constantly, and a wardrobe divided into rigid categories simply cannot keep up.

The name 31 Labels comes from a simple idea: there are 31 days in a month, and every one of them deserves to be dressed for. We call these micro-occasions, the coffee catch-up, the workday that turns into dinner, the impromptu weekend away. Big occasions still matter, but they are rare. It is the everyday moments we actually dress for, and they need pieces that move between settings without feeling out of place. Versatility is often mistaken for plainness. It isn’t. A versatile piece has a silhouette strong enough to carry different moods: a well-cut dress, a sharp co-ord, a shirt that looks as right with denim as it does with a silk skirt. Fabric matters just as much in a country where one wardrobe has to survive humid summers, the monsoon and cool winter evenings.

Indian women have always understood this. Many of us grew up watching our mothers wear the same saree with a different blouse, different jewellery or a new drape, and make it feel new every time. We are simply bringing that instinct to a modern wardrobe. The same dress becomes a workday look with a blazer, a lunch look with flats and gold earrings, and an evening look with a heel and a bolder lip. Repeating a piece is no longer a faux pas. It is a sign that you know what works for you. The biggest shift, though, is in how we shop. With endless options a scroll away, choice has stopped being a luxury and started to feel like labour. Women want fewer, better pieces that earn their place in the wardrobe rather than crowd it. That belief shaped 31 Labels: curated, not crowded, with every homegrown label chosen for how many lives its pieces can live.
Versatile dressing is not about owning less for the sake of it. It is about owning pieces that understand how you live. The modern Indian woman is not one person from nine to five and another after dark. She is all of them at once, and her wardrobe should be too.
