At a time when stalwarts like MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, and Gemini Ganesan reigned supreme in Tamil cinema, a suave newcomer entered the scene with a refreshing flair. With his investigative roles, charming persona, and stylish screen presence, Jaishankar carved a niche of his own, earning the affectionate title of South Indian James Bond. Revered by fans as a trendsetting hero, Jaishankar later evolved seamlessly into powerful character and villain roles in landmark films like Murattukalai (with Rajinikanth) Ellam Inba Mayam (with Kamal Haasan), Oomai Vizhigal (with Captain Vijayakanth), 24 Mani Neram (with Mohan and Sathyaraj), and Yaar (with Arjun), among others.

As he would have turned 85 this year, stars and fans alike came together at a Provoke Lifestyle exclusive conclave to celebrate the legacy of this iconic actor, sharing treasured memories and heartfelt tributes that remind us why Jaishankar remains etched in the annals of Tamil cinema.

Sathyaraj, Actor:

“I still remember watching Jaishankar sir’s debut film Iravum Pagalum during Pongal in 1965. The movie was a massive hit—it ran for over 100 days in theatres! What’s even more impressive is that two other big films were released at the same time, but Iravum Pagalum held its ground and emerged successful. Jaishankar sir always made sure that upcoming actors felt comfortable around him. What I admired the most about him was his sense of humor. He was fun-loving, jovial, and carried himself with immense confidence and boldness.“

Kalaipuli S Dhanu, Producer:

“I first met Jai Shankar at his home. It was for my first production film, Yaar. He was introduced to me by my dear friend, the late Kalaipuli Sekaran. The way he welcomed us was so warm and charming—it was the first time I met him, but it felt like we’d known each other for ages. We were truly on cloud nine in his presence. Even today, if a Jai Shankar film is re-released—especially Pattanathil Bootham—it would be nothing short of a blockbuster. There was a time when MGR and Sivaji ruled the industry, and even then, Jai Shankar’s entry created a massive wave. He was such a natural crowd-puller.”

Dato Radha Ravi, Actor, Politician:

“My father, M.R. Radha, and Jai Shankar acted together in a film called Taxi Driver. Since my dad was part of the cast, I visited the shooting spot and had a brief meeting with Jai Shankar sir. During that time, I was performing with Y. Gee. Mahendran’s troupe, playing a police officer. One evening, it got late after a show, and I was still in my police costume when I got a call—Jai Shankar sir wanted to meet me. Without changing, I rushed to Venus Studio in full police attire. When I arrived, he stood up, smiled warmly and said, “Vaanga Ravi, eppadi irukkeenga?” He then introduced me to everyone as M.R. Radha’s son. When he noticed my costume, he asked about it, and I told him I was acting with the troupe. I never asked him for any opportunity, but out of sheer generosity, he offered me a role in his film “Vanakkam Vaathiyare”. That moment marked the beginning of a close bond between us. As an actor, Jai Shankar sir was incredibly versatile—he knew horse riding, swimming, and so much more. A true all-rounder and a legend in every sense.”

Y. Gee Mahendran, Actor:

“I first met Jai Shankar sir when I was just 11 years old, during my time with Cho’s drama troupe. Even back then, I remember thinking how smart and charming he looked. Beyond that, he was incredibly fun to be around—so full of life. He felt more like a family member than just a fellow artist. One of Jai sir’s biggest strengths was his warmth. He had a way of making everyone feel included, like they truly mattered. He treated everyone the same—no hierarchy, no ego. That quality stayed with me and helped shape the way I built my own troupe. He once told me that he learned that very trait from my father, Y.G. Parthasarathy. That meant the world to me.”

Kutty Padmini, Actress and Businesswoman:

“I’ve acted in quite a few films with Sivaji uncle—those sets were always quiet, disciplined, and focused. But when it was a film with Jai Shankar sir, the atmosphere would be completely different—vibrant, full of laughter and energy. He brought so much life to the set. He taught me a lot, not just about acting but about life. I still remember how he used to take me around on his scooter. Those were some of the happiest days of my life. And then one day, he bought a car—I was genuinely upset because that meant no more scooter rides with him! Those moments with Jai sir will always hold a special place in my heart. Truly unforgettable.”

Sanjai Shankar Actor/Producer Verus production

“My dad was doing three shifts a day. We had a normal upbringing and didn’t grow up like star kids. We never went to the shooting sets. He never let his work mingle with our personal life. Every Sunday, he made sure that all of us had lunch together. He would make us eat all the vegetables. He never brought his stardom home. We even travelled by bus and auto as he felt that character of a person is more important than money. As a human being he has excelled in every way. He helped a lot of people enter the film industry. He was a legend, but he didn’t want us to enter the film industry. Now, I have my own production company called Verus Productions. After I entered the film industry, I started hearing good words about my dad from each and every person I met. Everyone talks great things about him. I feel so proud to be his son.”
