Quintessentially known for its white sand beaches and clear blue ocean waters with startling clarity, Maldives is once again witnessing a new wave of hospitality. Crowned the World’s Leading Destination for six consecutive years (2019–2025), the Maldives looks set to carry the title into 2026. This island paradise is visa-free and just a short hop away, two hours from Bengaluru, or three if you’re connecting via Chennai.

I discovered my world of blissful indulgence the moment my private catamaran glided into the lagoon of Bolifushi Island, shimmering like a jewel in the Maldivian sun. The descent into Malé had already been a spectacle, brilliant blues unfurling beneath the aircraft, but the speedboat ride to the resort sealed the enchantment. White sands, jade gardens, and coral reefs framed the island, while the staff welcomed me with warmth and tradition: rhythmic Boduberu drumming, kurumba water served in coconuts, champagne flutes, palm-leaf necklaces, and showers of flower petals. It felt like stepping into a reel of paradise.

Coming from the rush of city life, this was a breather I didn’t know I needed; a chance to slow down, reconnect with nature, and indulge in wellness and cuisine tailored to perfection. My personal Hiyani butler, named after the Dhivehi word for “shadow,” ensured every detail was seamless. Delight turned to wonder when I spotted my name etched on a personalised bicycle parked outside my villa, already imagining rides along the island’s spectacular views.
My check-in to my home for the week, an Ocean pool villa, was smooth. The space was all about modern elegance combined with indigenous charm. A private pool opened directly into the lagoon, and as the sun dipped, I sank into loungers to watch the sky paint itself in hues of gold and crimson. The Ocean pool villas also have their own private water slides. For those in Earth pool villas, the beach and Indian Ocean stretch out like a private canvas.

Dining here is an odyssey in itself. At Vista del Mar, world cuisine with a Spanish touch unfolded against ocean views. This was also where we had our energising breakfast from a lavish spread every morning by the beach. Saffron celebrated India’s heritage with regal thalis rich in saffron’s royal allure. I’m not really a fan of trying Indian cuisine on any of my international trips, but I’m so glad I tried this thali. It was simply one of the best and most lavish Indian thalis I’ve ever tucked into. Soyi curated unique Pan Asian flavours with artistry. My favourite at Soyi was the Sushi platter and the delicious Thai curry. I was in for a surprise at Cuvee, where I got to attend a wine tasting session with a sommelier as he paired fine wines and Champagnes with gastronomic brilliance. Origine served some of the most delicious contemporary European cuisine like globally-sourced seafood, Wagyu beef, caviar, and truffle. Ozar transformed from a tranquil pool bar by day to a lively sundowner hub by night, and Sangu Beach & Bar brought Arabic hospitality alive with mezze, tagines, shisha, and belly dancing under the stars.

The adventure streak in me came alive when I saw the menu at the Dive Centre where you can book private yacht charters, semi-submarine explorations, PADI-certified diving, and water sports from kayaking to flyboarding. The house reef teems with some of the most stunning marine life I have ever seen, and diving expeditions reveal coral caves and wrecks bursting with all kinds of colours. Snorkelling with nurse sharks was my personal favourite, a memory etched forever. The water was impossibly clear; a turquoise canvas painted with sunlight. As I slipped beneath the surface, the world above dissolved into silence, replaced by the rhythm of my breath and the sway of the ocean. Then, out of the shimmering blue, they appeared, sleek silhouettes gliding closer, their movements effortless, almost hypnotic.

One nurse shark drifted beside me, its presence commanding yet calm, while another passed just below, a shadow tracing the contours of the reef. For a heartbeat, I was suspended between awe and adrenaline, aware of their power but captivated by their grace. What surprised me most was not fear, but joy. To be so near, sharing the water with these magnificent creatures, felt like stepping into a secret world. Every flick of their fins was a reminder of the ocean’s mystery, every moment a thrill wrapped in wonder. It was fun, exhilarating, and profoundly beautiful, the kind of experience that lingers long after you’ve dried off, leaving you humbled by the ocean’s generosity.

Another unforgettable moment for me was the floating breakfast in my villa pool. The experience began by simply ticking our choices on a paper menu the evening before, selecting from tropical fruits, breads, bakes, choice of eggs and local specialties. The next morning, those selections arrived not on a table but beautifully arranged in a wicker tray that glided across our private pool. Watching breakfast float toward us on the turquoise water felt whimsical yet indulgent, turning an ordinary ritual into a serene, postcard-perfect memory.

With 90 overwater and beachfront villas, five restaurants, two bars, and a world-class spa, Ozen Reserve Bolifushi is where we found our perfect symphony of indulgence, adventure, and soulful connection. What sets this place apart from the many others I’ve been to, is the private butler at your beck and call any time of the day or night.

For those seeking serenity, the ELE | NA Elements of Nature Spa offers rituals infused with the energies of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Here, wellness feels like communion with the island itself. I felt completely at peace with myself and still energised to take on the world after my luxurious spa treatment here.
OZEN Bolifushi is where you’ll find barefoot luxury, where every sunrise feels like a promise and every sunset a celebration.
