It crossed my path a few metres ahead, paused with elegant poise, its large dark eyes meeting mine in a moment of pure, wordless recognition, before melting back into the green shadows. Just beyond, beneath the spreading arms of one of those timeless trees, sat a young student. Laptop balanced precariously on his knees, fingers flying across the keys with quiet urgency. I slowed for a breath, letting the image settle deep within me. The deer: continuity, instinct, the unchanging pulse of nature. The student: transformation, curiosity, the relentless forward surge of human ingenuity. In that single frame, captured between strides, lay the essence of our era. As World Youth Skills Day approaches on July 15, this contrast feels not merely poetic but profoundly urgent. This annual observance calls us to equip young minds with skills for meaningful work and engaged citizenship. Yet this year, the stakes have shifted. Today’s youth are not preparing for a world that exists—they are co-creating one that is still emerging, line by line, algorithm by algorithm.

The question is no longer, “What should I study?” It has deepened into something far more existential: “What kind of person must I become in an age when machines are learning to think, create, and perhaps even dream alongside us?” The answer will shape not only individual destinies, but the soul of societies themselves.

Living Through a Revolution
Every generation believes its moment is singular, etched in the annals of history. Most are gently mistaken. This one, however, stands apart. We are witnesses to a revolution that reaches into the very fabric of thought.

The Industrial Revolution reshaped muscle and machine. Electricity illuminated factories and homes alike. The internet wove the world into a single, humming conversation. But Artificial Intelligence ventures further—it is beginning to transform cognition, the quiet inner workings of the mind. For the first time, machines compose essays, diagnose ailments with uncanny accuracy, generate breathtaking images from mere words, draft legal briefs, translate languages in real time, and even anticipate needs we have yet to voice. They improve at a pace that feels almost alive.

My own life offers a modest yet vivid window into this whirlwind. When I joined the Indian Police Service in 1991, the world operated on paper and presence. At the National Police Academy in Hyderabad, a handful of computers stood like exotic artefacts—impressive, but peripheral. Official files journeyed physically from one desk to another, often carried by hands weary from bureaucracy. Crime records filled thick, handwritten ledgers. Communication crackled through wireless sets or relied on landlines and couriers. There was no internet in the stations, no instant databases, no predictive analytics.

I remember late nights in remote postings, poring over case files by lantern light, the weight of responsibility resting entirely on human judgment, memory, and grit. If someone had whispered in 1991 that a police officer would one day carry in his pocket a device capable of global communication, satellite navigation through labyrinthine streets, high-definition video recording of evidence, instant translation during interrogations, and near-instant access to the sum of human knowledge—I would have chuckled politely, dismissing it as the fancy of dreamers.

By the time of my retirement in 2023, the transformation was complete. Police stations hummed with digital records. Internet connectivity was as routine as the morning briefing. Data analytics helped map crime patterns, drones surveyed vast terrains, facial recognition sifted through crowds, and tools powered by AI were no longer on the horizon—they had arrived. In just over three decades, I had journeyed from the age of ink-stained fingers and physical dossiers to the age of algorithms that could process thousands of data points in seconds. Few generations have compressed such profound change into a single professional lifetime.

My parallel journey as a marathon runner echoes this tale with equal poignancy. When I took up serious running in my early sixties—post-retirement, seeking clarity amid life’s transitions—training was elemental. A simple watch to mark time, a notebook for logging distances, and the raw wisdom of the body: the burn in the lungs, the ache in the legs, the quiet triumph of crossing another finish line. Decisions flowed from intuition honed by miles, observation of weather and terrain, and sheer stubborn persistence. I ran through Chennai’s humid dawns and sudden downpours, learning endurance not from gadgets, but from the road itself.

Today, the landscape has evolved. Runners strap on devices that monitor heart rate variability, sleep cycles, training load, cadence, elevation gains, and even recovery metrics with laboratory precision. Apps like Strava turn solitary efforts into shared stories, while wearables like Whoop offer insights that once demanded teams of sports scientists. During one particularly demanding training block, I recall pushing through a fasted morning run, my body in ketosis, mind clear and focused. The data later confirmed what intuition had whispered: mitochondrial adaptations deepening, fat oxidation improving, the quiet alchemy of discipline yielding results.

Yet across both policing and running, the same profound lesson emerges. Technology has metamorphosed beyond recognition. Human nature—the need for integrity, courage, judgment, and leadership in service; the raw power of discipline, perseverance, and presence in endurance—remains steadfast. The tools evolve. The fundamentals do not. And in this truth lies perhaps the most vital guidance for young people stepping into the AI age.

The Age of Exponential Change
Ray Kurzweil, the visionary futurist, has long illuminated this truth: technological progress is not linear, but exponential. We, humans, think in straight lines—”tomorrow will be like today, only incrementally better.” Technology, however, curves sharply upward, accelerating in ways that can feel sudden and disorienting.
Kurzweil’s words resonate deeply: “An analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential.” Consider this—the smartphone resting in a student’s palm today holds more computational power than the entire systems that guided Apollo missions to the Moon. AI tools that dazzle us now may seem quaint within five years.

This exponential arc means the world awaiting today’s college graduates will differ profoundly from the one their professors inherited. Jobs that define tomorrow may not yet exist. Industries will bloom overnight; others will fade like morning mist. Uncertainty breeds anxiety, yes—but it also sparkles with unprecedented opportunity for those bold enough to embrace it.

Learning, Unlearning, and Relearning
Alvin Toffler foresaw this decades ago with prescient clarity: “The illiterate of the twenty-first century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

The traditional life script—study diligently, graduate, secure a stable job, climb the ladder, retire comfortably—has become a relic. Young professionals today will likely pivot careers multiple times, reinventing themselves amid shifting sands. A software engineer might evolve into an AI ethicist or systems orchestrator. A doctor could become a pioneer in AI-augmented personalised medicine. A teacher might craft immersive, adaptive learning worlds. Entrepreneurs will birth ventures whose names we cannot yet imagine.

Learning is no longer confined to youthful classrooms or early careers. It is a lifelong companion, a daily practice of humility and wonder. In my advisory role at Orchid Pharma, applying my PhD in Microbiology to real-world manufacturing challenges, I see this daily. AI follows suit. It automates the mundane, freeing humans for higher pursuits, while spawning demand for AI trainers, prompt engineers, cybersecurity guardians, ethical AI auditors, and countless hybrid roles. The true peril is not replacement by machines, but obsolescence for those who fail to partner with them.

As Ethan Mollick eloquently argues in Co-Intelligence, the future belongs to those who collaborate with intelligent systems—augmenting human creativity rather than competing against silicon efficiency.

The Age of Distraction
In this paradox of abundance, distraction emerges as a stealthier adversary than AI itself. Never have we possessed so much information, yet struggled so profoundly to focus. Notifications ping like insistent mosquitoes. Social media algorithms feast on our attention, rewarding the superficial. Entertainment streams endlessly, leaving us intellectually malnourished.

Seneca warned centuries ago: “To be everywhere is to be nowhere.” Cal Newport, in Deep Work, sharpens the point: “The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable.”

I have felt this in my own training. A focused, undistracted run—mind clear through meditation or Om chanting—yields deeper endurance than scattered efforts interrupted by pings. For students, the power to concentrate for hours on a complex problem may soon be the ultimate differentiator, a human superpower amid algorithmic noise.

The Skills That Will Endure
What, then, should young people cultivate?
Master the art of learning. Curiosity becomes your sharpest tool—question, explore, iterate.
Hone critical thinking. AI offers answers; wisdom demands verification, nuance, and the courage to challenge assumptions.
Nurture creativity. Machines generate options; humans discern meaning, craft stories that resonate, innovate at the intersection of domains.

Refine communication. Clear writing, empathetic listening, persuasive storytelling, and authentic leadership—these forge connections no algorithm can fully replicate.

Develop emotional intelligence. Empathy, trust, collaboration, and conflict resolution remain the glue of human endeavour.

Embrace adaptability. Reinvent with grace, viewing change as an invitation rather than a threat.

Build AI literacy. Understand the tools, wield them ethically, and verify outputs. To ignore AI today is akin to dismissing computers in the 1990s.

Interdisciplinary fluency will shine: the doctor fluent in AI, the engineer attuned to human psychology, the policymaker bridging technology and ethics.

Careers of the Future
Promising horizons beckon in AI and machine learning, cybersecurity, biotechnology, genomics, mental health, renewable energy, climate tech, semiconductors, space exploration, robotics, data science, precision agriculture, edtech, and human-centred design. Amid the silicon surge, our irreplaceable gifts endure. We imagine worlds unseen. We dream, hope, and love. We infuse life with purpose. A machine may parse a poem’s structure; only a human feels its ache. It may compose melodies; only we are stirred by nostalgia or joy. Viktor Frankl’s wisdom endures: “Those who have a why to live can bear almost any how.”

Purpose, meaning, moral compass—these are ours alone.

A Message to Young India
India, with its vast demographic dividend, stands at a luminous crossroads. This youth bulge is a profound gift, yet one that demands stewardship. Read voraciously—beyond syllabi, into philosophy, science, literature. Write to clarify thought. Speak with conviction. Move your body daily, as I do through runs and balance drills, forging resilience. Learn technology intimately, but never surrender to dependence.
